Pakistan cricket board has appointed Dav Whatmore as head coach of Pakistan cricket team. During the Chairmanship of former PCB Chairman Naseem Ashraf, Dav Whatmore was also a candidate but during the appointment process, Naseem Hassan Shah adopted very silly procedure. He arranged meetings between players and Coaching candidates and then gave power of choice to players to select one of them. Obviously, in country like Pakistan, the choice of players was in favour of a soft coach. Because in presence of soft coach these players were free to act according to their own wishes rather than acting on the plans of coach. Resultantly, players preferred Jeff Lasson instead of strict Dav Whatmore.
The abilities of Dav Whatmore are not hidden from the eyes. Sri Lankan cricket team was an average team but when Whatmore take charge of the Coaching, this team became world champion in 1996. This man provided confidence to Sri Lankan players and Romesh Kaluwitharana and Sanath Jayasuriya played with different ideas after coached by Whatmore. Under 19 Indian cricket team won the world cup in 2008 in his coaching. Bangladesh cricket team played like tigers in his coaching. Bangladesh defeated Australia and South Afria in 2007 and defeated India in world cup 2007 and qualified for super 8 in his coaching. All these stories are enough for understanding the professional approach of Dav Whatmore.
Now the responsibility of PCB is to hand over young talented player to him for grooming. Only by this way Pakistan can utilize his abilities. I don’t think that he can groom players like Misbah and Imran Farhat on this stage. We have saw Dav Whatmore so many times reacting very hard to his players mistakes even in dressing room and this reaction shown us his strictness. Therefore, there is possibility that some Pakistani players can disturb his coaching process because there is ego problem with some players, but PCB should issue strict instruction to the team members that any misbehavior with coach well not be tolerate. No doubt, discipline and hard work are the key features towards success.
